FIFA president likely to meet PM Modi next month

FIFA President Gianni Infantino will likely meet PM Narendra Modi when he visits India during the women’s U-17 World Cup in October. This was announced at the AIFF executive committee meeting on Monday.

Scheduled from October 11-30, the U-17 World Cup final will be held in Navi Mumbai. As per the convention, the FIFA president is likely to attend the final. “The members were informed about the possibility of the FIFA president meeting honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the way forward for Indian football. They would be making some ” path-breaking announcements, ” said Shaji Prabhakaran, the federation’s secretary-general.

The FIFA president presented a memorable shirt to the Prime Minister when they met each other at the 2018 G20 Summit held in Argentina.

FIFA suspended India on August 15 for “interference by a third party” when AIFF was being run by a committee of administrators appointed by the Supreme Court. The ban was lifted on August 26 following several rounds of negotiation between officials of the Union sports ministry and FIFA. The top court dissolved the committee of administrators.
