The 2022 Video Music Awards were about big wins, emotional tributes, and great acts. It seemed like a perfect moment for American pop singer Taylor Swift to announce her next album after the pop singer-songwriter won the most significant award at the MTV Video Music Awards 2022 (VMAS). The award ceremony took place in New Jersey, the USA on Monday. “I thought it would be a fun moment to tell you that my new album comes out on October 21,” said Swift, after she won the Video of the Year for her project named All Too Well: The Short Film. The hosts for the evening were Nicki Minaj, Jack Harlow, and LL Cool J.
It was a three-hour-long ceremony with unmissable moments. Rapper Jack Harlow performed his hit song First Class. Actor Johnny Depp made a surprise virtual appearance at the show. Rapper Nicki Minaj performed a medley of her hit songs before accepting the Micheal Jackson Video Vanguard Award. She paid tribute to music icons such as Micheal Jackson, Whitney Houston, Lil Wayne, and Kanye West during her acceptance speech. K-pop girl group Blackpink won Best Metaverse performance and their youngest member Lisa won Best K-pop for her solo debut, Lalisa. With the win, Lisa became the first K-pop soloist to grab a VMA. Blackpink also performed their recently released song Pink Venom. Boyband BTS won the Best Group of the Year title, their fourth successive win. With the win, BTS became the most awarded group in this category. Hip-hop legends Eminem and Snoop Dogg brought metaverse to the VMAs, as they performed From The D2 The LBC. Rock band Red Hot Chilli Peppers received the Global Icon Award. They performed many songs, including Can’t Stop and Black Summer. Singer Lizzo performed her very renowned song, About Damn Time.
Harry Styles was also mere miles away from the VMAs, performing one of his many Madison Square Garden shows in New York, but was able to make a virtual appearance for his album of the year acceptance speech for “Harry’s House”. Bad Bunny made VMAs history on two counts this year. First, he delivered his best Latin-nominated hit song “Tití Me Preguntó” live from Yankee Stadium — marking the first remote broadcast by MTV from the iconic location. And secondly, Bad Bunny is the first-ever non-English language artist to win a Moon Person for artist of the year. Bad Bunny was nominated alongside Drake, Ed Sheeran, Harry Styles, Jack Harlow, Lil Nas X, and Lizzo.
